The 10 best restaurants in Munich

The culinary life of the Bavarian capital arouses fundamental disagreements among gourmets. Some argue that Munich is a gastronomic desert that offers exclusively pork shank, fried sausages, sauerkraut and German beer.
But opponents object and cite as an example establishments with a rich selection of gourmet dishes, marked by Michelin stars. We belong to the second group of opponents and present the best restaurants in Munich to your court.

Vinothek by Geisel Munich is rightly considered the beer capital of Germany. But few people know that this Bavarian city is famous for establishments offering a huge selection of wines. You can verify this at Vinothek by Geisel, a family bar-restaurant with a collection of 700 types of the favorite drink of the god Dionysus. On top and the menu is not disappointing connoisseurs of Mediterranean and German cuisine.
The interior is traditional and restrained. The interior is decorated with vaulted ceilings, medieval iron lamps and dozens of antique bottles. The service is perfectly maintained: the waiters will recommend you not only the original dish, but also the wine suitable for it, telling about its history and properties. Over the creation of a delicious meal conjures Thomas Kal. The chef’s record includes work in the best Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. The average bill is 35 €.

Restaurant 181 Until 2009, the Olympic Tower in the capital of Bavaria was not of interest to gourmets. Then, the German cooking maestro Otto Koch drew attention to the highest building in Munich, and the situation changed radically. And although in 2015 the chef crowned with laurels left the establishment, the revolving Restaurant 181 continues to attract guests with sophisticated international cuisine and an elegant interior. The spacious bright hall, located at an altitude of 181 m, makes a full revolution in 53 minutes. In fine weather, panoramic windows offer a unique view of the city and the Alpine foothills. During the day, the restaurant operates on the principle of a-la-carte. In addition to a 3-course menu (€ 36.50), you can order delicious dishes and breathtaking German desserts. In the evening, the time comes for haute cuisine, complemented by a rich selection of the best exclusive wines. The cost of dinner is 54-150 €.

Ratskeller Traditions of national German cuisine formed the basis of the Ratskeller menu – one of the best restaurants in the center of Munich. Opened at Marienplatz in 1874, it hosts its guests in the basement of the City Hall. Until now, white sausages are being tasted here by Weißwurst, Obazda cheese appetizer and excellent baked Schweinbraten pork. In addition to the eternal “classics”, guests are offered to taste dishes prepared from fish from the North Sea and Lake Chiemsee. Ratskeller is huge. In the numerous Gothic rooms, where 1,200 people are accommodated, you can get lost. Each room of this culinary kingdom is not similar to the neighboring one. But all of them are united by authentic furniture, vaulted ceilings and paintings created not without a share of humor, depicting the history of Bavaria’s brewing. By Munich standards, the prices in the restaurant are low – a hearty dinner will cost 20-40 €.

Schwarzreiter As of 2018, there are 13 restaurants in Munich that are highly rated in the Michelin Red Guide. One of them is the owner of 1 star Schwarzreiter, located in the fashionable hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski. The Michelin-starred institution is named after King Ludwig II’s favorite treat, the smoked char from Lake Chiemsee. Of course, this delicious fish still occupies the top line of the seasonal menu. The young talented chef, Mike Menzel, and her team, in their own way, interpret traditional Bavarian cuisine and refuse the most “heavy” ingredients. Do not look for fried pork or rich soup here. The secret of local food is a combination of unexpected textures, delicate taste and age-old recipes. The best wine from Germany, Austria and France will be an excellent accompaniment to the dishes offered. And choose one of 480 varieties will help sommelier Andrei Grunert. Dinner at Schwarzreiter will cost you between 99-190 €.

Augustiner Keller One of the best traditional establishments in Munich, the Augustiner Restaurant, was a giant beer cellar a couple of centuries ago. Today, 5 authentic halls await visitors in the historic building. In the warmer months, invites to the tables under the chestnuts beer garden (Biergarten), which simultaneously seats 5 thousand people. This place has not changed its appearance since 1895. Here, noisy tourists, business people in formal suits, and farmers who come to agricultural fairs feel at ease. For more than 200 years, the restaurant has remained faithful to traditional German dishes and a drink made by the oldest city brewery, Augustiner-Bräu. The local cuisine is famous for Ochsenfetzen ox meat cooked in pepper sauce and Tiroler Bergbauernsalat Tyrolean salad. As a dessert, regulars recommend the sweet Kaiser omelette Kaiserschmarrn. For a hearty lunch flavored with a liter mug of foam, you will have to say goodbye from 15-35 €.
